I own many properties in currituck county including carova beach. I welcome the commercial development at swan beach. My ancestry dates back to 1656 in northeastern north carolina. Smart development is needed in currituck county. Quit making a big deal out of the horses in the area. Why don't you worry about turtle nesting on the beach where many vehicles roam.

Wow its going to be so great to be able to get a SLURPEE in swan beach. Do everybody a favor and sell your properties.

If this happens, I can guarantee you this beach will be like all the others "nothing special". Why do you think the tourists come here in the first place? Because it is the only protected beach in the area where they can see horses roam freely and take a step away from the hustle and bustle of commercialization. I guarantee if you asked them why they chose this beach, it would not be because they were looking for hotels and shops on the beach. God Bless Carova Beach the way it is!

I'd like to know where I could see a larger version of the proposal map.

In addition, I would respectfully request that the "Property Owners" survey form be expanded to include all Corolla property owners.

Thanks for all your work keeping us up to date!

The survey for residents and property owners includes all residents of Currituck County. If you are a resident outside of Currituck County, the second petition for tourists and visitors would be the best place. Please do sign the petition.

If you send a comment with your email address, we can send the files we have to you. We will not post your email

We rented property through Twiddy for years specifically because we could go to an area without commercial development! And recently we decided to purchase a house in the 4x4 area. We will now postpone that decision and start to look for another place to vacation -- if commercial goes into the area. PLEASE STOP THIS COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THAT UNIQUE AREA!

FYI, there is already an historic distric present. It is the natural area that is historic, not some cheap construction material shipped in from China! The historic area is a joke, just some greedy builder trying to develop the last pristine section of beach in OBX. If the current economic times are any lesson, we need to get back to basic's, and build homes that are environmentaly friendly and appropriate fot Swan. . Have we learned nothing from the current economic situation of greed in this country? Wake up people. "Save Swan Beach". Peace....

To Anonymous:

I asked the blog administrator to remove my original comment -- it was a bit strong. But I find great humor in your comments and that you use anonymous as opposed to your real name. Why?

My guess is that you work with a local real estate office, probably somewhere in Dare County --- You are probably not the owner of the firm (who would recognize that this will HURT your sales and tourism not help it in the long run).

And you probably come back every day to read your blog and see if anyone else agrees. WELL THEY DON"T! No one would want commercial in the one area that is pristineif they thought about the future of the funding they could make (especially in real estate sales or rentals) if it REMAINS A NICHE AREA!

The horses are also one of the reasons folks come to the area -- You guys have lots of real estatqe and lots of money on the paved roads. Let's just keep one area where it can be world renowned. Why ruin in?

Now do us all a favor: reveal just who you are and stop trying to mislead people by making them think you are an average guy/gal who wont stand to make significant income if commercialism comes to the northern outerbanks.

I live in Virginia Beach and visit Corolla several times a year to get away from tourist and hotels. Where I live has been ruined and there is no turning back. I truly hope and pray that you do not ruin the natural beauty of your county by allowing hotels and urban sprawl. Who will fight for the piping plover, sea turtles, and the wild horses???? I guess it will have to be me. By the way, I have never seen any of the wild horses while visiting there. I suppose it is due to the fact that I am not willing to pay someone to drive me around and tear up the beach. I prefer to hike it. Have a good day.

I have been to the outer banks nearly every year since 1974. My uncle built one if the first houses in Sanderling. I no longer have any desire to stay south of the roads end because of the increasing commercial activity. Swan, Carova and the other neighboring areas are a safe haven for me and 4 generations of my family. If this becomes commercial, we will simply go somewhere else. You will end 30+ years of vacations for our family in NC. We will spend our time and $$$ (add it up over 30 years) somewhere else.

I am truely sadened to hear that the commissioners are even considering to overturn the standing restriction of commercial development. The wild 4x4 beaches are the reason my family has been coming to your beaches! We purposly do not chose Duck b/c it is too commercial. We have purposely chosen north of Corolla becuase of the beauty-the ability to see the horses in the wild. I will be sad if the commissioners' decisions put us in a position to chose other beaches to vacation. Oh, by the way, I am brave enough to put my name! Unlike folks who do not have the integrity to lay claim to their statements.

Greed is ruining this country and it is obvious that this proposal is just short term greed of a few people.

Long term, if you keep it like it is, you will make even more money for yourself and save a beautiful area. Wake up and think long term while saving this place
